Residents of Kumarapalayam Municipality in Namakkal have demanded to restrict vehicles from entering into the daily market near the bus stand in the morning.
Kumarapalayam Municipality is situated 65 km away from Namakkal town and 15 km away from Erode town. With 33 wards in the municipality and over 75,000 people residing there, the main occupation is weaving and textile-related business. On October 28, 2023, on behalf of the Municipal Administration department, a daily market was constructed at a cost of ₹2.78 crore, near the Kumarapalayam Bus Stand, under the Kalaingar Urban Development Scheme.
There are around 400 shops functioning in the daily market, which functions until 10 p.m. every day. People residing in the municipality and in Erode district visit this market to purchase commodities. Meanwhile, residents have sought to restrict vehicles entering the market during morning hours, a time when the public arrives in large numbers.
S. Subramani, a resident of Kumarapalayam, said 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. witnesses more footfall for the market. But, at that time, minivans and two-wheelers enter the market to unload the vegetables and other items. As people running grocery shops in the municipality and nearby districts come to this market to buy vegetables in wholesale, they park their vehicles inside the market. “This is inconvenient for the people as they are unable to walk in the market, as the space between the shops is less,” he said. The Municipal Administration should take steps to impose restrictions for two-wheelers and four-wheelers inside the market, Mr. Subramani added.
Ravi, a resident, said that from 2 a.m., vehicles are unloading the items inside the market. If these vehicles are not allowed for just four hours the public shall complete their purchase quickly. The Municipal Administration should ban vehicles from entering into the market or at least install barricades in the morning hours, he added.
When contacted, Kumarapalayam Municipal Commissioner C. Ramesh said that he will look into the issue.
