New York Giants‘ running back Cam Skattebo’s second year in the NFL didn’t go as he might have expected. Through the sixth round, the coaching staff is not too pleased with the running back.
Reports suggest that Giants are very keen on reshaping their backfield dynamics which might go in the direction to shake things up in the Giants’ roster and lineup.
Giants reshape backfield dynamics
Cam Skattebo’s second NFL campaign with the New York Giants have taken a troubling turn after entering the year with high expectations following a rookie season cut short by an ankle injury. His reduced standing became undeniable in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints, where he failed to record a single carry, signaling a stark departure from his expected role as a key contributor in the backfield.
Although team leadership publicly downplayed narrative claims of an official benching, his complete absence from the ground attack served as clear evidence that his standing as a primary option is in doubt. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Giants evaluating major adjustments to reshape their backfield dynamics.
Internal discussions are leaning toward handing the “keys to the car” to Tyrone Tracy Jr., giving him a significantly larger share of the workload to evaluate if he can sustain the run game as the featured option. “They’d also love to alter things at running back, apparently. The new coaching staff has clearly soured on Cam Skattebo, the Giants just released Najee Harris, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see them add someone from the outside or give Tyrone Tracy Jr. a bigger chance.” Graziano wrote.
These potential backfield shifts coincide with pivotal lineup changes across the entire unit, including adjustments at quarterback with JJ McCarthy stepping into the starting lineup against Houston.
J.J. McCarthy to start from week 7
The New York Giants officially named J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback for their Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans. The decision follows a strong fourth-quarter relief performance in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints. After coming off the bench with the Giants facing a deficit, McCarthy provided an immediate spark, throwing for 243 yards, a touchdown, and an interception while putting together multiple scoring drives.
Head coach John Harbaugh noted that while Jameis Winston performed admirably and led the team to key victories earlier in the season, inserting McCarthy gives the offense its highest dynamic ceiling moving forward.
“It’s all things considered. What gives us the best chance to be our best? Gives us the best chance to play the best offense we can, and I thought Jameis has done a tremendous job. Won us games, played well. But as we go forward here, this is going to be our direction, and we think it gives us some good options on offense.” John Harbaugh said.
Handing the starting reins to McCarthy gives the front office and coaching staff a direct look at how the young quarterback commands the offense under game pressure, serving as a key litmus test for the franchise’s direction.
