The verdict is in on Coronation Street. Will Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) be found not guilty of murder? Or is Orange the New Platt… for life?
Nobody thought this day would come. No, reader, not even you.
The very idea that Corrie would let soap royalty like Sarah rot in a prison cell for pushing a no-good abuser like Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) to this death seemed as sensible as letting Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Francis-Brown) run a creche. She wasn’t even included in the original lineup of six suspects.
Yet against all odds, Sarah was the one who knocked the vile villain off the scaffolding, bringing his torment of her best friend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce).
The question is – did she act out of fear and self defence? Or out of anger, because of all the vile things Theo said about Todd and the baby he and Sarah lost as teenagers? Because that’s the difference between manslaughter and murder.
Unfortunately for Sarah, what makes this looks like murder is not going to the police straight away, instead getting her old flame Gary Windass’ (Mikey North) to dispose of the murder weapon.
Not only that, but she got her other ex boyfriend DS Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) to help pin the whole thing on Gary.
After languishing in jail, the day Sarah’s been dreading is finally here, in upcoming episodes of Coronation Street.
This week is trial week, and Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) is doing her best to persuade Kit to come clean to Sarah about his cancer diagnosis before she takes the stand. After all, Sarah needs him on side as a character witness. But Kit refuses.
However, Sarah finds out another way when she’s visited in prison by Bethany and Todd, who ends up blurting it out.
Bethany begs Sarah to let Gary carry the can for Theo’s murder, pointing out that she needs her, Kit needs her and Harry needs her. Sarah’s torn. What will Sarah do?
Sarah surveys her prison cell, worried it might be her home for many years. Is she right?
In court, the prosecution barrister tries to paint Sarah as Todd’s angry best friend who took the law into her own hands and killed Theo in a crime of passion.
Then Sarah’s arresting officer Lisa (Vicky Myers) and Theo’s ex-wife Danielle (Natalie Anderson) take the witness stand. Suddenly Sarah’s chances of freedom are looking pretty grim.
So grim that David (Jack P Shepherd) accuses Lisa of sabotaging Sarah’s defence., and then lays into Kit for not supporting her enough. Kit loses it and washes his hands of Sarah, David, Bethany and their whole family.
Next it’s Todd’s turn to take this the stand…
… while Bethany puts pressure on Kit to step up to the plate, not only for Sarah’s sake but for Harry’s too.
Eventually, Kit takes the stand. But will he tell the whole truth?
Then comes that all important verdict.
Sarah listens to the barristers’ closing speeches, sick with nerves. In the court corridor, the usher announces that the jury has reached a verdict.
What will it be?
