Time is running out on Dont’e Thornton.
And with each passing week, it becomes harder to point to his health as the reason the Raiders wide receiver remains on injured reserve.
By Thornton’s assessment, he is healthy. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak has said the same.
“Yeah, he’s healthy,” Kubiak said Friday.
There is also an obvious need at his position, where the Raiders are short on available bodies and need someone beyond Tre Tucker to emerge as a dependable contributor.
Healthy player. Clear need. Significant opportunity.
Yet Thornton remains on the outside looking in.
“He will not be activated for this game,” Kubiak said Friday.
That means Thornton will not be on the field in Sunday’s game against the Rams, extending his season-long absence and leaving him little time to convince the Raiders he belongs on the field.
“He’s making big progress,” Kubiak said. “He’s done a lot of good things in practice. Still working back into getting his football legs back after missing a lot of time. But I’ve been really pleased with his effort, with his detail. He’s close.”
Just not close enough to be activated yet, which seems significant given the Raiders obvious needs in the wide receiver room, and the door they opened for Thornton to show he can contribute.
Now, a deadline is looming, and there is a very real possibility that Thornton’s season will end before it ever actually started.
The Raiders opened Thornton’s practice window Oct. 7, beginning the 21-day period in which they could evaluate him before deciding whether to activate him. That window closes Oct. 28.
If Thornton is not activated by then, he will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
For a player drafted on potential, the possibility of losing an entire year of development is particularly troubling.
The Raiders selected Thornton in the fourth round of the 2025 draft out of Tennessee. The attraction was obvious.
At 6-foot-5, with a 4.30-second 40-yard dash, Thornton possessed an uncommon combination of height and speed.
But he arrived as more of a raw prospect than a finished receiver. The physical gifts were there. Turning them into consistent NFL production would require development.
Thornton finished his rookie season with 10 catches for 135 yards and no touchdowns in 15 games.
Those numbers underscored how much work remained. And while injuries have interrupted his second season, the breakthrough the Raiders envisioned has yet to materialize.
His current situation only sharpens that concern.
Kubiak has consistently said Thornton needs to show he is ready to play. Being healthy enough to practice does not automatically mean being ready to contribute on Sundays.
The Raiders have now had more than two weeks to evaluate him. Their decision to keep him off the roster for another game suggests he has yet to demonstrate what the coaching staff needs to see.
That does not establish precisely where Thornton is falling short. But with his health no longer the stated obstacle, the question becomes whether the Raiders trust him to help.
And another receiver could soon enter the picture.
Jack Bech, who suffered a broken forearm against the Saints, is eligible to return from injured reserve next week after missing the mandatory four games. Bech said he is good to go and eager to return.
His importance both in the pass game and as a run blocker, coupled with his special teams versatility, not only give Bech an advantage over Thornton in terms of a roster spot, they are big-time needs for the Raiders.
At this point, it would be a surprise if Bech wasn’t immediately added to the 53-man roster, which further clouds Thornton’s situation just as he reaches the end of his evaluation period.
The door remains open. Thornton still has an opportunity to turn his physical promise into something the Raiders can use.
But potential can only carry the conversation so far.
The Raiders need production. Thornton needs to show he can provide it.
And the clock is ticking.
