Three members of a family suffered burn injuries after a gas leak caused an explosion at a house in Gazipur's Tongi area today (21 October).
The incident occurred around 6am on the ground floor of a two-storey building near Madrasa Market on Bhadam Road in Tongi.
The victims are Lal Chan Mia, 44, his wife Nasima Khatun, 40, and their daughter Tanisha Akter, 16. They have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Dr Sultan Mahmud, resident surgeon at the burn institute's emergency department, said Lal Chan had suffered burns to 95% of his body, Nasima to 85% and Tanisha to 86%.
All three had also sustained burns to their respiratory tracts, and their conditions were critical, he added.
Beauty Akter, the elder daughter of the couple, who resides nearby, said she rushed to the scene after being informed of the explosion.
She noted that while the house was connected to the Titas gas pipeline, the family also kept an LPG cylinder for domestic use.
"We suspect that gas accumulated inside the house overnight due to a leak from either line, which subsequently triggered the explosion in the morning," she added.
The family is from Rupsi Kuripara of Phulpur upazila in Mymensingh. The couple work as operators at a local garment factory, while Tanisha is a school student.
