Opposition party leaders have held consultations with five presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and advance a coordinated opposition strategy.
The consultations involved the national chairmen and national secretaries of six political parties: the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
The presidential candidates who participated in the engagements were former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP.
The meetings were held in furtherance of resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Salihu Lukman, convener of the G100 Summit, who signed on behalf of the coalition parties, said the consultations were aimed at translating the summit’s resolutions into practical steps towards opposition cooperation.
According to the statement, the engagements provided a platform for party leaders and presidential candidates to discuss a framework for cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider measures to advance a shared democratic agenda.
It added that the discussions were driven by the need to address Nigeria’s challenges through collaboration across party lines, stressing that the country’s future, citizens’ welfare and the credibility of elections should take precedence over narrow political interests.
“The consultations remain ongoing,” the statement said, adding that further engagements would build on the G100 resolutions and the commitment to an opposition that is organised, responsible and capable of working together in the national interest.
The coalition said Nigerians would be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progressed.
Although the consultations signal efforts by opposition parties to strengthen cooperation ahead of the 2027 polls, the statement did not disclose any agreement on a joint presidential candidate, a merger or a formal electoral alliance.
The statement was signed by Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, under the slogan, “For God and Country.”
