An octogenarian who raised four children on a tight budget has donated 21.95 million won (about $15,000) to help neighbors in greater need. The donor, who has difficulty walking, came to city hall in person to hand over the money and said that now that her children are settled, she wants to help struggling neighbors around her.
The city of Yongin in Gyeonggi Province said on the 14th that an octogenarian resident of Cheoin District, identified only as A, donated 21.95 million won on the 8th to a fund for people in need.
A came to Yongin City Hall in person to deliver the money. Tucked among the bundles of cash was a handwritten letter, each character carefully pressed onto the page. The letter described a life spent for family and a desire to share with others despite limited means.
A raised four children on a modest household income while her husband worked in a coal mine. Money was tight throughout those years, but with her children now grown and established members of society, she said she wants to help neighbors who have less than she does.
"We live under financial strain, but my children have grown into upstanding members of society, so now I want to share with neighbors in need," A wrote in the letter. "I hope the money will be used for elderly people who are lonely and for children in families that need help."
Yongin officials visited A in person to thank her and presented a "shy giving" emblem, created to honor donors who give quietly rather than seek recognition for their names.
