The Tomorrow’s Golf League, better known as the TGL, is preparing for its third year of existence this December, and they are determined to grow the league. With new teams already being announced, and rosters finalized, the league experienced a new first Monday.
They had the first trade in TGL history.
The trade was between the Bay Golf Club and Boston Common Golf, and it involed only one golfer. That golfer was Shane Lowry.
As the news broke, the Bay sent Lowry to Boston Common, joining his long-time friend Rory McIlroy, for the following stipulations.
The Bay Golf Club and Boston Common Trade Details
- Shane Lowry to Boston Common
- The Bay Golf Club received Boston Common Golf’s fourth selection to fill its open roster spot in this season’s roster formation process and one future selection across the next three offseasons, along with commercial considerations.
This trade comes as TGL expands to five-player rosters for the 2027 season, something has desperately been needed with players dealing with offseason injuries and surgeries. However, with the vacancy now on their roster, Boston Common Golf’s full roster will be announced in the coming days.
Fans of the TGL know this, but for those new to the league, these organizations are treated more like NFL teams than they are just a collection of golfers having some fun in front of a simulator. There is a lot of money being pumped into this project, and these golfers are part of organizations valued at $90 to $100 million dollars.
Needless to say, Lowry is absolutely thrilled to be joining his pal Rory for the next TGL season.
“I’m delighted to be joining Boston Common Golf. Having Rory alongside me and being part of this group makes it particularly exciting, and I’m looking forward to helping the team bring a championship to Boston,” said Shane Lowry. “Beyond the golf, Brian Moran and I are really looking forward to getting to know Mark, Teddy and the entire team at Fenway Sports Group. We look forward to building relationships across the FSG family.”
As for McIlroy, his enjoyment of getting Lowry on his team was certainly notable.
“Shane is a great friend and someone I love having alongside me in team competition,” said Rory McIlroy, co-founder of TGL presented by SoFi and Boston Common Golf founding member. “We’ve had some special wins together, including at the Zurich Classic (of New Orleans), and I know the quality of his game and how much he cares about winning for his teammates. I’m delighted to welcome him to Boston Common Golf and excited about what we can achieve together this season.”
As McIlroy mentioned, the tandem won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2024, and Lowry’s resume speaks for itself. Lowry’s had victories at the 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the 2019 The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. He also has represented Europe in three Ryder Cups, helping the team win in 2023 and retain the trophy in 2025.
This might be the first trade in TGL history, but the question remains if it will be the last? It is certainly a step in cementing itself as a legitimate league, and not just an offseason sideshow for golf fans around the globe.
