Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital’s maiden Nurses’ and Midwives’ Belting Ceremony offers Ghana an important opportunity to rethink professional recognition, leadership accountability and the future of nursing.
On 14 October 2026, the Nursing and Midwifery Administration of Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital marked an important milestone with the maiden edition of its Nurses’ and Midwives’ Belting Ceremony and Nurses’ Durbar.
Under the theme “Promoted to Lead, Empowered to Serve,” the ceremony celebrated professional advancement while drawing attention to a fundamental question: What does promotion truly mean in nursing and midwifery?
Beyond the ceremony, photographs, applause and beautifully presented belts lies a deeper conversation about professional identity, leadership, accountability and the quality of care delivered to patients.
A belt is not merely an accessory. A rank is not merely a title. And a promotion is not simply an advancement on the professional ladder. Each represents a responsibility to patients, colleagues, institutions and society.
The belt: A symbol of professional identity
In nursing and midwifery, professional recognition matters. It acknowledges years of training, experience, service, competence and commitment to the care of humanity.
The belt provides a visible symbol through which professional progression can be recognised. When properly understood, it can help nurses and midwives appreciate the different stages of their professional journey and encourage the public to understand the structures within the nursing and midwifery workforce.
However, the true value of a belt lies not in its colour or appearance but in what it represents.
A belt should remind its wearer of the standards expected at that level of practice. It should inspire discipline, ethical conduct, continuous learning and a renewed commitment to safe, compassionate and evidence-informed care.
The public, too, deserves to understand what these symbols mean. Professional recognition becomes more meaningful when society understands the training, experience and obligations associated with the people entrusted with its health.
This is why public education must accompany professional celebration.
The rank: Recognition must translate into leadership
Professional rank is an important component of nursing and midwifery administration. As practitioners advance, expectations regarding leadership, clinical judgement, mentorship, decision-making and accountability also increase.
A senior professional is expected to contribute beyond individual patient care. The role increasingly includes supporting junior colleagues, strengthening clinical standards, identifying risks, improving documentation, promoting research and audit, and helping to build a culture of continuous quality improvement.
Yet rank alone does not guarantee leadership.
A senior nurse who fails to recognise a deteriorating patient, a manager who overlooks unsafe practice, or a professional who refuses to mentor newly qualified colleagues undermines the purpose of advancement.
True leadership is demonstrated in everyday practice: in the patient whose deterioration is recognised early, the junior colleague who receives appropriate guidance, the unsafe process that is corrected, and the difficult decision that protects a patient’s life.
Promotion must therefore be understood as an invitation to greater service, not merely a reward for past service.
The responsibility: The patient must remain at the centre
The ultimate test of nursing and midwifery leadership is its impact on patient outcomes.
Ghana’s healthcare system requires professionals who can recognise critically ill patients early, communicate effectively, respond appropriately to emergencies, prevent avoidable harm and uphold the dignity of every person who seeks care.
These responsibilities cannot be delegated to a belt or discharged by a title.
Every nurse and midwife, regardless of rank, has a duty to practise within their competence, follow professional standards, escalate concerns and protect patients from preventable harm. Senior practitioners and managers have additional responsibilities to create the conditions that enable safe practice, including effective supervision, adequate training, reliable systems and accountability for standards.
Newly qualified nurses and midwives deserve particular attention. They enter a demanding clinical environment where theoretical knowledge must be translated into sound decisions under pressure. They require structured orientation, supportive mentorship, competency assessment and opportunities for continuing professional development.
When experienced professionals invest in the development of younger colleagues, promotion becomes a mechanism for strengthening the entire workforce.
When they fail to do so, the significance of rank is diminished.
Why the Weija Gbawe initiative matters
The maiden Belting Ceremony at Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital offers an opportunity to make professional recognition more purposeful.
By bringing the ceremony together with a Nurses’ Durbar, the Nursing and Midwifery Administration created a platform to celebrate advancement and encourage reflection on professional expectations.
Hosted by Chief Nursing Officer Patricia Kyei, the occasion placed professional identity and service within the broader conversation about nursing leadership.
The initiative also provides a foundation for sustained public education through a simple but important message:
Understand the Belt. Recognise the Rank. Respect the Responsibility.
Understanding the belt means appreciating the professional journey and standards it represents.
Recognising the rank means acknowledging the different levels of professional development and leadership within nursing and midwifery.
Respecting the responsibility means expecting every professional to demonstrate competence, compassion, integrity and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
These principles should extend beyond the ceremony. They should inform orientation programmes, clinical supervision, mentorship, performance assessment and continuous professional development.
A belting ceremony becomes truly transformative when the values celebrated on stage are visible in the wards, outpatient departments, emergency units, maternity services and every other point where patients encounter nursing and midwifery care.
From celebration to measurable impact
The next step is to translate recognition into action.
Healthcare institutions can strengthen the value of professional advancement by linking leadership expectations to practical improvements in care. These include regular competency assessments, structured mentorship for newly qualified practitioners, clinical audits, research-informed decision-making, effective incident reporting and timely responses to patient-safety concerns.
Professional development should also encourage nurses and midwives to embrace innovation and digital health tools while retaining the human judgement, empathy and ethical responsibility at the heart of clinical practice.
Management must provide the systems and resources necessary for professionals to succeed. In turn, practitioners must demonstrate that their advancement produces value for patients, colleagues and the institution.
The measure of a successful belting initiative should not be limited to the number of belts presented or the elegance of the ceremony. It should also be reflected in stronger professional identity, improved leadership behaviours, better adherence to clinical standards and a sustained commitment to patient safety.
These outcomes require deliberate planning, consistent monitoring and collective responsibility.
A call to Ghana’s nursing and midwifery profession
The message from Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital is relevant to the entire nursing and midwifery profession in Ghana.
To newly promoted nurses and midwives: wear your belt with humility. Let your new rank be evident in your competence, conduct, leadership and commitment to those entrusted to your care.
To senior practitioners and managers: let promotion deepen your commitment to mentorship, accountability and the development of the next generation.
To healthcare institutions: build professional recognition into a wider strategy for workforce development, clinical governance and quality improvement.
To the public: recognise that nursing and midwifery involve rigorous professional preparation, specialised responsibilities and a continuing obligation to protect human life.
And to policymakers and professional leaders: continue creating environments in which nurses and midwives can develop their capabilities, exercise responsible leadership and contribute meaningfully to health-system improvement.
The belt must become a promise
Ultimately, the belt is a symbol. Its significance depends on the conduct of the person who wears it.
The rank identifies a level of professional progression. The responsibility determines whether that progression makes a meaningful difference.
As Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital celebrates the beginning of this initiative, the opportunity is to establish a tradition in which recognition leads to reflection, reflection leads to professional growth, and professional growth leads to safer, more compassionate and higher-quality healthcare.
The true success of a belting ceremony will be seen long after the music stops, the photographs are taken and the guests depart. It will be seen in the lives protected, the colleagues mentored, the standards upheld and the patients treated with dignity.
The ceremony was proudly sponsored by Samstel Group of Companies
The belt is the symbol. The rank is the recognition. The responsibility is the promise.
And that promise must be renewed every day, with every patient, in every clinical setting.
