Villa Blue, Ibiza, Spain
Skip the Ibizan clubs and head for the hills instead. Surrounded by towering cypress trees and deep breath-inducing pine forests, this sleek white villa captures a quieter, more bohemian side to the island. Inside, minimalist interiors combine soft creams and natural timber with floor-to-ceiling glass that looks out onto punchy vistas of countryside and sea. But the best part is the huge, rounded pool which juts out over the landscapes, where you can spend a sun-drenched afternoon lounging, before challenging the family to a pétanque match on the lawn. Head to nearby Cala Benirrás for world-famous sunset views, then return for a slap-up supper on the panoramic veranda.

You’ll wake up to daily fresh breakfast hampers delivered straight to your door – you’ll not have to lift a finger – then head out for a swim in the stunning private saltwater pool, which overlooks more of those glorious valley vistas. The rolling grounds have an indulgent outdoor roll-top bathtub for soaks under the stars and quiet nooks for reading under the shade of ancient trees. Inside, the bedrooms have welcome air conditioning, so you’ll not be tossing and turning while trying to sleep, either.

Trulli Salamida, Alberobello, Puglia
Secreted among winding threads of centuries-old olive groves, this sweet whitewashed trullo gives you a chance to bed down inside a piece of authentic Puglian history, if only for a weekend. The place has been sympathetically restored by the Salamida family – who have farmed these ancient olive trees for generations – and now the exposed conical stone arches open onto cosy, light-filled rooms finished with a slew of refined rustic touches, and a truly enormous pool to swim lengths in under the stars. Start your day off properly with an al fresco coffee beneath the trees before sampling the family’s signature extra virgin olive oil – and do grab a bottle to glug generously over your lunch. This is a wonderful spot for a break away, just moments from Alberobello’s UNESCO-listed old town, so a perfect romantic southern Italian escape.

Wooden eco home, Cowfold, United Kingdom
The perfect pool need not mean hunting far and wide, as this two-bedroom rural guesthouse on home turf proves. Interiors are unfussy yet elegant, from the marble counter in the kitchen to the plush sofas huddled around a log burner, but the real showstopper is the terrace outside. A 17-metre oasis among private fields, the pool is heated during the spring and summer months, but is open all year round for daring guests who fancy a cold plunge. Expect sleepy mornings on the sunloungers, days packed with splash-filled fun, and evening paddles beneath the soft glimmer of garden lights – all British weather permitting, of course.

It seems almost sacrilegious to swim in a pool when some of the world’s most beautiful beaches are nearby, but that’s not stopping us from appreciating this resort-style Holualoa home. This infinity pool on the Big Island overlooks the ocean, and is set just outside the open-plan living room (with eight-foot pocket doors, so you don't miss an inch of the view). The hardest part will be deciding where to post up: the poolside lounge chairs, the day bed, the hot tub, or the pool itself are all options. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom home sleeps four, and was built by the same people behind the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai with classic Hawaiian architecture in mind.

Once you’re done admiring the scenery from the water, creamy stone steps lead directly to the outdoor sunken lounge, ideal for stargazing beneath clear skies or enjoying smoky meals from the rustic barbecue beside. The home itself is one of the more modest on our list, but all essential bases are covered: a kitchenette with fridge and hob, neat double bedroom, and sofa space with TV.
