Austin Lemieux, the 30-year-old son of NHL legend Mario Lemieux, will compete in next week's Butterfield Bermuda Championship as an amateur.
Lemieux, who played hockey in college at Arizona State before transitioning to golf, shot a 66 on Monday to qualify for the tournament at Port Royal Golf Course.
The performance comes a month after Lemieux's breakthrough win at the Pennsylvania mid-amateur championship. He added another title to his resume on Oct. 6 at the Indian Spring Country Club's East Course in Boynton Beach, Florida, where he edged Jake Springer in a playoff for a win on the Minor League Golf Tour.
The 68-player qualifier Monday was also held in Florida to give the four winning players time to arrange their travel.
The other three Monday qualifiers were Adam Long (64), Matthew Anderson (66), and Willie Mack III (66).
Lemieux grew up around both ice and grass as his dad was a scratch golfer — a figure often seen on the celebrity golf circuit, in addition to being one of the greatest hockey players of all time.
The Penguins legend played all 17 seasons in Pittsburgh, where Austin was born, and finished his NHL career with 690 goal and 1,033 assists. The two-time Stanley Cup champion player also brought three NHL titles to Pittsburgh as an owner — the only man to have his name on the Cup as a player and owner.
In 1998, Lemieux won the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe. He's also has finished inside the tournament's top 10 twice.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship begins next Thursday, Oct. 22, in Southampton, Bermuda.
