Democrats may be favored to win the Senate on November 3, but a forecast suggests they could come within one seat of a substantial 55-45 majority.
With ten days until Election Day, Vote-Scope projects Democrats will secure 54 seats.
Its published range extends from 48 to 55, placing that larger outcome at the optimistic edge of the model’s forecast.
Yet two independent polling experts told Newsweek that reaching 55 remains a long shot.
Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said it was "probably beyond realistic," while Patrick Ruffini, a founding partner at Echelon Insights, estimated the probability at "on the order of 1 in 10."
Democrats need a net gain of four seats for a 51-seat majority.
Reaching 55 would require eight pickups without an offsetting loss, forcing the party to defend every seat it holds before winning several races in Republican-leaning territory.
Why It Matters
The president’s party usually struggles in midterm elections, giving Democrats a favorable national backdrop, but the Senate map forces them to compete deep inside Republican territory.
Historical records show the party in the White House lost Senate seats in 15 of the 23 midterm elections held from 1934 through 2022, although the pattern has been less consistent in the Senate than in the House.

What Current Forecasts Show
Vote-Scope’s main Senate forecast, updated October 23, projects 54 Democratic seats, with a range of 48 to 55 and a 71 percent chance of a majority.
Based on 529 polls and 50,000 simulations, its methodology weights surveys for quality, sample size and recency before adjusting for measured pollster effects.
The Fred Cornell Senate Forecast gives Democrats 52 expected seats and a 66 percent chance of winning at least 51. Democrats finish between 45 and 58 seats in 95 percent of its simulations.
Meanwhile, the 270toWin consensus forecast, compiled from seven forecasters, places 49 seats in the Democratic column and rates five as tossups.
None publish the frequency of a 55-seat Democratic result. Their figures show that such an outcome remains possible, but do not measure its precise likelihood.
Ruffini said the forecasts underline the gulf between Democrats taking control of the Senate and achieving a substantial majority.
"Getting to 51 is a coin flip or a bit better for Democrats," he said. "Getting to 55 requires the polls to underestimate Democrats in exactly the kinds of Midwest states where they’ve historically been most overestimated."

Democrats’ Path From 47 To 55
To achieve a substantial majority of 55, Democrats would have to retain every seat they hold, including potentially competitive contests in Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire.
Four leading offensive opportunities then run through North Carolina, Maine, Ohio and Texas.
Even sweeping those races would produce 51 seats, enough for control but still four short of 55.
Ruffini identified Alaska, Iowa and Kansas as the next most credible possibilities, followed by Florida or Nebraska.
Nebraska presents an added complication because independent Dan Osborn has said he would not caucus with either party.
Miringoff described Michigan and Texas as contests worth watching, adding: "Dems probably need to put Kansas in play to get to 55."
The Republican Firewall
Iowa may provide the dividing line between a sizable majority and a landslide.
Ruffini said Texas and Ohio could deliver seats 51 and 52 because Democrats have perceived candidate-quality advantages there.
Iowa is harder because its recent partisan fundamentals and history of polling misses both cut against the party.
"If Democrats win Iowa, Kansas becomes realistic and 55 is on the table," Ruffini said. "If they lose Iowa, 53 is about the ceiling."
His skepticism rests partly on polling performance.
According to Ruffini, 73 percent of polls from 2018 through 2024 overestimated Democrats, rising to 93 percent across Iowa, Ohio and Michigan.
What Would Have To Change
Ruffini estimated that Democrats would probably need to lead the national House vote by 10 to 12 points, compared with public Senate polling that he said implied an environment closer to eight points.
A national wave would cause competitive races to move together, making simultaneous breakthroughs possible rather than eight isolated upsets.
The same correlation would rapidly dismantle the party’s route if one of its necessary building blocks fell.
The likeliest mechanism, Ruffini said, would be a turnout collapse among low- and medium-propensity voters who backed President Donald Trump in 2024 but do not regularly participate in midterms.
"The 2024 coalition depended on voters who don’t normally show up for midterms," he said. "If Republicans’ problems extend beyond there to those who at least sometimes vote in midterms, this scenario is no longer unthinkable."
