Sidney Hill, who lives in Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal, was leaving his driveway with his children when armed suspects reportedly blocked his vehicle and opened fire. Hill returned fire in what has been described as an act of self-defence, killing one of the alleged attackers. The remaining suspects reportedly fled.
The incident has since raised questions about the legal process that follows a shooting, while Hill and his family face the challenge of recovering from the traumatic experience.
BackaBuddy campaign raises money for Sidney Hill
Supporters launched a fundraising campaign on BackaBuddy, a South African crowdfunding platform, under the title “Sidney Hijacking Survivor”.

According to the campaign details provided, it had attracted 353 individual donors and raised R172,300 (approximately KSh 775,000) towards its R500,000 (approximately KSh 2.25 million) goal within days.
The organisers said the money would help Hill manage legal expenses and pay for professional trauma counselling for his children, who witnessed the violent incident.
They also acknowledged that the full cost of legal proceedings and the length of time the children may need counselling remain uncertain.
The campaign is intended to ease the financial pressure on Hill as he works to provide stability for his family while dealing with the aftermath of the incident as reported by Briefly News.
Police investigations and legal proceedings
Following the shooting, law enforcement authorities reportedly opened investigations into the attempted hijacking and attempted murder allegations. An inquest was also initiated into the death of the suspect who was shot.
In South Africa, an inquest can be held to establish the circumstances surrounding a death, including one resulting from a shooting. Such a process does not, by itself, establish that the person who fired the shots committed a crime.
The campaign has prompted questions about why Hill may need financial assistance for legal costs if he acted in self-defence.
However, the legal outcome cannot be assumed before the relevant investigations and proceedings have been completed. The circumstances of the incident and any eventual legal findings will determine how the case is resolved.
Socia media users react to the fundraiser
The campaign has received support from people who praised Hill for responding to an armed threat while protecting his children. Others questioned the need for a legal defence fund or argued that the authorities should recognise his actions.
Some commenters expressed the view that the circumstances amounted to a clear case of self-defence.
@Marcus Filer wrote: “What legal costs? Was a clear case of self-defence.”
@Frank Marriott added: “This is an open-and-shut case. Self-defence. Armed and unlicensed thugs.”
Others focused on the broader issue of crime and the role of law enforcement.
@Chris Smith remarked: “What legal costs? He should be paid a bonus for doing the SAPS work.”
@Shaam Dhoodhanath suggested: “SAPS should consider giving this dad a hefty reward. He didn't save his family only but others who could be targeted by these demons, in the future.”
SAPS refers to the South African Police Service, the country’s national police force.
Other commenters questioned the fundraising approach itself.
@Helen Van Der Walt noted: “And every second headline starts a back-a-buddy…”
Meanwhile, @Shashi Singh pointed to the legal process that can follow a shooting, even when self-defence is claimed.
“It is procedural after a shooting. He will be charged. He is innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately, the process in SA is that way.”
Hill and his children face a difficult recovery
Beyond the fundraising debate, Hill and his children face the emotional consequences of the incident, alongside the demands of any ongoing legal process.
The campaign organisers say the donations will help meet the costs of legal representation and counselling as the family works towards recovery.

With R172,300 (approximately KSh 775,000) raised against a target of R500,000 (approximately KSh 2.25 million), the fundraiser remains focused on reducing the financial burden on Hill during an uncertain period.
The case highlights the challenges families can face after violent crime, including the cost of legal support and the need for professional help for children exposed to traumatic events.
