The New York Rangers have lost one of their most distinctive former stars following the death of Ron Duguay, whose combination of offensive talent, flamboyant style and celebrity appeal made him a prominent figure in professional hockey.
Duguay died Thursday, October 22, aged 69, after battling colon cancer, leaving behind a legacy that extended well beyond his achievements on the ice.

The Canadian-born forward spent parts of 12 seasons in the NHL, becoming particularly popular during his time in New York, where his flowing hair and energetic performances earned him a devoted following.
His death also brought an emotional response from Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate, who had been in a relationship with Duguay since 2022.
What was Ron Duguay's cause of death?
Duguay's death followed a battle with colon cancer, with his condition becoming increasingly serious during the final stages of his illness.
Family members had previously shared updates about his treatment, including photographs of the former hockey player receiving medical care.
His daughter, Shay Thomas, documented parts of his health battle, while Palin remained a significant source of support throughout his treatment.

Duguay was previously married to Robin Bobo and later to model Kim Alexis, with both relationships ending in divorce.

Palin confirmed Duguay's passing with a deeply personal message acknowledging the difficulties of his final months.
"It's with a shattered heart, but also deep peace knowing Ron is with Jesus now," she wrote on social media. "He fought so hard. Love never ends."
Her tribute reflected the close bond the couple had developed since beginning their relationship in 2022, as well as the emotional toll of Duguay's illness.
A celebration of his life is expected to be announced at a later date.
One of the New York Rangers' most memorable players
Selected 13th overall in the 1977 NHL Draft, Duguay quickly established himself as a talented offensive forward with a personality that attracted attention throughout New York.
He helped the Rangers reach the 1979 Stanley Cup Final, where they were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens in five games.
Duguay also enjoyed one of his finest individual seasons in 1981-82, scoring 40 goals and earning NHL All-Star recognition.
"The New York Rangers organization mourns the loss of Ron Duguay, one of the most popular players in franchise history," the team said.
"Ron's signature skating style — with his hair flowing as he moved down the ice — captivated The Garden Faithful, and his skill, tenacity, and charisma earned him the admiration of all New Yorkers."
Across 864 NHL appearances, Duguay recorded 274 goals and 346 assists, representing the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings.
Duguay's legacy extended beyond hockey
Duguay became a recognizable celebrity during his time in New York, appearing in advertising campaigns and developing friendships within the city's entertainment and artistic communities.
His distinctive appearance and outgoing personality helped make professional hockey more visible beyond its traditional audience.
After his NHL career, Duguay continued working in the sport as a coach and broadcaster, including more than a decade covering Rangers games for MSG Network.
He is survived by three children, Shay Thomas, Amber Stavros and Noah Duguay, along with five grandchildren.
Although Duguay's hockey achievements secured his place in Rangers history, his impact extended beyond statistics, leaving memories of a player whose charisma was as recognizable as his talent.
