Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may finally get a chance in India’s playing XI for the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
The teenager has been left out of six consecutive T20 internationals, and he also sat out the series opener on Thursday, which India won to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
The door has now opened because of an injury to Ishan Kishan, who has been ruled out of this game with a groin strain. Kishan’s absence leaves a vacancy in the batting order, and Sooryavanshi is the most obvious replacement, particularly given his explosive strike rate.
Many fans have wanted to see him in action for weeks, and this looks like the cleanest way for the team management to give him a game without dropping a settled opener.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play today in the 2nd T20I at Hagley Oval, Christchurch?
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should get a chance to open the innings in the 2nd T20I.
There is, however, one catch. The management is understood to be considering Varun Chakravarthy as an alternative, which would mean going for extra bowling instead of a like-for-like batting change. India’s bowlers conceded 225 in the first match, so the idea of strengthening that department is not hard to understand.
Should Chakravarthy be preferred, Sooryavanshi’s wait for a game will stretch even further, and the debate over his limited opportunities will only grow louder. The final decision is expected when the team sheets are announced at the toss.
