Michigan football made a not-so-controversial quarterback switch outside of the Wolverines' locker room, but it could have been a huge controversy within when offensive coordinator Jason Beck told Tommy Carr he was replacing ballyhooed quarterback Bryce Underwood in the second half of the Penn State game. Though head coach Kyle Whittingham is mum about who will start this upcoming week against Indiana, famed alum Rich Eisen says that it's time to roll with Carr moving forward.
He shared more on his show on Monday about his thought process there.
"Two interceptions by Bryce Underwood," Eisen said. "I had one of my dear fraternity brother friends from back in college text me at halftime saying, 'If Bryce comes out at halftime, I'm snapping the game off. I need to see Tommy Carr.' And some of it's on Bryce; some of it was not. And I was wondering, is Kyle gonna, with his own set of eyes, because Bryce Underwood, his body language going into halftime, it looked like he was miserable. And if you're looking at your leader and like that's that's tough to look at. And Kyle decided to make the move that so many in the alumni base have been saying: let's see what Tommy Carr looks like. Can we, and we took the Carr for a spin. And suddenly, the run game's working, and everything else was working in a way that we hadn't seen with consistency over the first couple of months.
"So I think this is his show, with all due respect to Bryce. Indiana's next; can't make any mistakes there."
After going through some of the other college football slate, Eisen returned back to his true love: the maize and blue. And while he continues to advocate for Carr to remain at the top post, leading the offense, he also had a message (or two) for Underwood: this could work out for all parties involved, but stay ready just in case.
"I do believe, barring injury, Tommy Carr is your new starter at the University of Michigan," Eisen said. "I'm results-oriented. And hey, I'll just say this to Bryce Underwood through this camera right here: Bryce Young got benched. He was No. 1 overall. He got benched, now look at him. Jalen Hurts: the most famous college football benching this century, benched by the arguably greatest coach in the history of the sport. Quarter of a billion-dollar contract professionally. So head down, and if you walk out the door and transfer somewhere else -- because Jalen Hurts did eventually leave -- I get it. Totally understand it. But there for the grace of the football gods, he could be under center against Indiana, or Ohio State. So head on straight."
