- The Sharks are reportedly set to conclude a disciplinary hearing against Springbok legend Bongi Mbonambi later this week
- The incident allegedly occurred during a team-building excursion to Zululand in the preseason period
- Coach JP Pietersen has repeatedly refused to comment on Mbonambi's absence from three URC matches
The Sharks are awaiting the outcome of a disciplinary hearing involving Springbok star Bongi Mbonambi, with the matter expected to be resolved later this week.
The franchise confirmed the process was underway but declined to discuss the details publicly. A source told IOL:
"Out of respect for the disciplinary process, the Sharks decline to comment."
What Led to Mbonambi's Absence
The disciplinary process stems from an alleged incident during a preseason team-building trip to Zululand. While the specific nature of the allegations has not been confirmed, reports suggest Mbonambi did not comply with the behavioural instructions set by coach JP Pietersen on certain evenings of the excursion. The hearing is still ongoing, and full details remain sub judice.
Mbonambi has been absent from the Sharks' first three United Rugby Championship fixtures this season, and his non-selection has generated significant media attention. Pietersen has been asked repeatedly about the star's whereabouts at press conferences. Each time, he has offered only two words in response: "No comment."
What a Guilty Ruling Would Mean
Should the disciplinary panel find Mbonambi in breach of team protocols, it would carry considerable weight given his profile. The veteran is a multiple World Cup winner with the Springboks and one of the most decorated players at the franchise.
However, the Sharks' current leadership structure places significant emphasis on collective standards. Club captains Vincent Koch and Phepsi Buthelezi are understood to oversee discipline within the playing group, and any ruling against Mbonambi would signal clearly that the club will not exempt high-profile individuals from those expectations.
The Sharks have made a positive start to the current URC season, and reports suggest the squad has displayed a cohesive culture under Pietersen. Whether Mbonambi remains part of that setup will become clearer once the hearing concludes.
