Missouri basketball’s season is getting closer, but one of its most important roster questions still does not have an answer. Forward Mark Mitchell is seeking a fifth year of NCAA eligibility, and his case was scheduled for a court hearing Wednesday, Oct. 14. Coach Dennis Gates changed his SEC media-day appearance so he could be there in support of Mitchell.
The uncertainty matters for a Missouri team picked eighth in the SEC preseason media poll. Mitchell averaged 18.3 points per game last season and made 38.8% of his 3-point attempts, according to Reuters. If he is cleared, he would give the Tigers an experienced scorer as they prepare for the season. If he is not, Missouri will have to plan around a major loss.
Why Mitchell’s eligibility is in question
Mitchell played four college seasons and is pursuing a fifth year. His route back has included a legal fight over eligibility rules and an attempted transfer to Kentucky. That move did not go forward after the SEC’s restrictions on intraconference transfers became an issue.
Sounds like no ruling today in the preliminary injunction case involving Mark Mitchell. Not surprising if that's the case.

Mitchell went undrafted this summer. He agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Denver Nuggets but did not sign it, Reuters reported. That left the door open for him to pursue another college season, though it did not settle the eligibility question.
The timing adds pressure for Missouri. The new season is only weeks away, and a ruling could affect lineup decisions, practice roles and how Gates uses the team’s returning players and newcomers. Missouri also has DePaul transfer CJ Gunn awaiting an eligibility decision, giving the Tigers more than one unresolved roster issue.

Gates says Mitchell has earned his support
Gates has been clear that he is standing by Mitchell through the process. He pointed to the forward’s role in the program, including his arrival when Missouri was struggling and his contributions during the team’s recent NCAA Tournament appearances.
“I’ll always be there for Mark Mitchell,” Gates said.
That support is meaningful for a player whose next step remains uncertain, but it does not guarantee the outcome of the hearing. As of the reporting ahead of Wednesday’s court appearance, a final eligibility decision had not been reported.
For Missouri, the practical question is simple: How much of its 2026-27 plan can it build around Mitchell before the NCAA eligibility issue is resolved? The answer could shape the Tigers’ ceiling in a competitive SEC.
