Pope Leo XIV has praised Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re for his service to the Catholic Church, describing his contribution as an “edifying testimony of love for the Church and for the Pope”.
The Pope made the remarks in a letter to Re following his resignation as Dean Emeritus of the College of Cardinals, according to a statement published in the Holy See Press Office Bulletin on October 12, 2026.
In the letter dated October 11, 2026, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to the cardinal for serving in the position for more than six years, highlighting his contributions to the Holy See and his work with successive popes.
“Having accepted your resignation from the office of Dean of the College of Cardinals, a role you have fulfilled with great distinction for more than six years, I wish to express my gratitude for the service rendered by Your Eminence,” the Pope wrote.
He described Re as a trusted collaborator of successive pontiffs, particularly Pope John Paul II, who appointed him to several positions within the Roman Curia.
According to the letter, Re served as Assessor of the Secretariat of State, Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Substitute of the Secretariat of State.
Pope Leo also recalled the cardinal’s role during the Great Jubilee of 2000, when he directed and coordinated offices supporting Pope John Paul II’s teaching and pastoral mission, accompanying him on apostolic journeys across Italy and other parts of the world.
At the beginning of the new millennium, John Paul II appointed Re head of the Congregation for Bishops and elevated him to the College of Cardinals, the letter stated.
The Pope said Re’s long service had given him extensive knowledge of the universal Church and helped him establish numerous personal relationships.
“I do not think I am mistaken in saying that you, Your Eminence, have been and remain one of the Holy See’s best-known and most highly esteemed servants,” he wrote.
He also praised the cardinal’s open and frank manner, wisdom in handling challenges and commitment to the teachings of the Church.
Pope Leo noted that Re’s role as Dean of the College of Cardinals had brought him greater prominence, adding that many people had appreciated his priestly witness during Eucharistic celebrations, most recently at the funeral of Pope Francis.
The Pope further commended the cardinal’s faith and commitment to ministry, referring to his episcopal motto, “Virtus ex alto”, which he said reflected Re’s reliance on the strength and grace of God.
He concluded by assuring the cardinal of his prayers and renewing his blessing upon him, his family members and loved ones.
