Al-Baha's Stone Architecture Highlights Traditional Construction Skills on Intangible Cultural Heritage Day
As the world marks the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on October 17, the stone villages of Al-Baha Region reflect the ingenuity of past generations, who built homes from local stone suited to the environment using skills in selecting, shaping, and laying stone learned through practice and passed down over time.
Nestled among farmland and highlands, the structures show how builders relied on readily available stone to harmonize with the terrain and way of life. Today's construction and restoration work keeps this craft alive, requiring a precise understanding of stone, techniques for securing it, and the skill to fit each piece together.
This knowledge forms part of intangible cultural heritage, giving the buildings value as a record of the community's experience and collective memory. UNESCO established the international day in 2023 to highlight practices, knowledge, and skills, including traditional crafts, and to promote their safeguarding and transmission to future generations.
