The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has been allotted the Mayor’s post in Visakhapatnam under the NDA-seat sharing arrangement for the upcoming local body elections scheduled to be held on October 28. The allocation was officially confirmed announced by the NDA partners on Thursday night.
TDP leaders have been consistently staking their claim to the Mayor’s post, citing the party’s strong political presence in Visakhapatnam. They argue that the party’s electoral performance in the city’s core areas warrants its claim to the coveted position. They point out that even during the YSR Congress Party’s (YSRCP) wave in the 2019 Assembly elections, the TDP had won all four Assembly constituencies in the core areas of Visakhapatnam.
With the Mayor’s post now allotted to the TDP, attention has shifted to the selection of the party’s candidate. Several names are reportedly doing the rounds in party circles, with aspirants and their supporters making efforts to secure the nomination.
The daughter of a senior TDP leader, who previously served as a corporator from North Assembly constituency, is among the names being discussed for the post. The names of the spouses of a few other senior TDP leaders are also reportedly under consideration. Besides, several serving corporators are said to be lobbying with the party’s high command, expressing their willingness to take up the responsibility.
