The Tampa Bay Rays needed a strong performance from Freddy Peralta on Tuesday night. What they received was one of the most impressive postseason outings of the veteran pitcher's career. Peralta delivered six scoreless innings as Tampa Bay defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series.
The win evened the best-of-seven matchup at one game apiece and prevented the Rays from traveling to Cleveland facing a two-game deficit. Peralta allowed four hits, walked two batters and recorded six strikeouts during his 99-pitch outing.
However, one particular number made his performance especially remarkable. The 30-year-old right-hander reached 99.4 mph with his fastball, the hardest pitch of his major league career.
Peralta finds another level in October
Peralta's increased velocity was particularly impressive considering his regular-season fastball averaged approximately 94.3 mph.

According to MLB.com's game coverage, the veteran threw 29 pitches above 97 mph against Cleveland. That represented a significant increase in power for a pitcher who already possessed the ability to miss bats with his fastball.
Peralta also relied heavily on that pitch throughout the outing, repeatedly challenging Cleveland hitters rather than allowing them to settle into comfortable counts. His performance came at an ideal moment for Tampa Bay.
The Guardians had won Game 1 by a 7-3 score and entered Tuesday's matchup with considerable momentum after their dramatic comeback against the Chicago White Sox in the previous round. Peralta prevented Cleveland from building on that success.
One defensive mistake changes everything
The Rays scored all three of their runs during the fourth inning. A fielding error by Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez extended the inning and allowed Tampa Bay to break the scoreless tie. Liam Hicks then delivered a two-run single, giving Peralta a three-run advantage.
The Guardians eventually scored in the seventh inning when Chase DeLauter produced an RBI double, but Tampa Bay's bullpen protected the lead.
Bryan Baker finished the victory, recording his fourth postseason save. Cleveland starter Parker Messick was charged with the defeat despite allowing three unearned runs over five innings.
The result demonstrated how quickly one defensive mistake can change a postseason game.

ALCS heads to Cleveland completely even
The series resumes Thursday at Progressive Field, with Game 3 scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. Cleveland still has an opportunity to take control with three consecutive home games, but Tampa Bay has restored momentum after losing the opener.
Peralta's performance also offers encouragement beyond the final score.
If the veteran can maintain even some of the additional velocity he displayed Tuesday, the Rays could possess an even more dangerous postseason pitching option than they anticipated.
Tampa Bay needed a response after Game 1. Peralta delivered one with six shutout innings and a fastball that reached a level he had never previously achieved.
