PASIR GUDANG: A fire involving piles of timber and buoys in Jalan Muhibbah, Kampung Pasir Putih, here, was fully extinguished yesterday after nearly 43 hours of firefighting.
The blaze, which broke out at 10.04pm on Oct 14, engulfed 1.3935ha of open land before firefighters extinguished it at 4.47pm yesterday.
Johor Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Nazarudin Yusof said firefighters had contained 98 per cent of the blaze by 8am yesterday, covering about 148,000 sq ft, before continuing efforts to put out the remaining hotspots.
"By 4.47pm, 100 per cent of the fire had been extinguished, with no remaining area affected by the blaze," he said in a statement today.
A total of 19 firefighters took part in the operation, supported by 17 personnel from other agencies, including the police, Ulu Tiram Volunteer Fire Brigade, Malaysian Civil Defence Force and SWM Environment.
No casualties were reported.
Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said witness accounts indicated that several men from a nearby village had set fire to a pile of wood to recover scrap metal, with the blaze believed to have spread to nearby fibreglass floats.
