South Korean information and communications technology experts have won a string of posts at an intergovernmental economic cooperation body.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said on the 24th that two Korean experts have been elected to key positions in steering groups under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Telecommunications and Information Working Group, known as APEC TEL.
Jang Ju-dong, a researcher at the National Radio Research Agency, was elected convener of the ICT Conformance and Interoperability Steering Group, the ministry said. Park Jung-eun, a researcher at the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), was elected deputy convener of the ICT Development and Policy Steering Group. Both terms run for two years.
APEC TEL is a consultative body set up to promote ICT development and cooperation on policy and regulation in the Asia-Pacific region. It pursues policy and technology cooperation among member economies through three steering groups covering ICT development and policy, security and trust, and conformance and interoperability.
Korea's advance into the steering groups follows the election of Kang Ha-yeon, a senior research fellow at KISDI, as co-chair of APEC TEL in 2024.
An official at the Ministry of Science and ICT said the repeated appointment of Korean experts to key APEC TEL posts reflects a high assessment by member economies of the experience and expertise Korea has built in ICT policy and technology. The official added that the ministry would continue to strengthen policy and regulatory cooperation in the ICT sector, support Korean companies entering overseas markets, and contribute to digital development in the Asia-Pacific region and to greater ICT trade within it.
