Kansas City Current is an American football club, but somebody needs to check whether its Facebook administrator has secretly relocated to Malawi because the Chichewa, Malawi flags and Temwa Chawinga madness are getting out of hand!
The club is thousands of kilometres away, yet its Facebook page is beginning to look like a digital extension of Malawi, with supporters storming the comments section whenever their favourite daughter touches the ball.
And the culprit? Temwa Chawinga, Malawi’s goal machine whose magic on the pitch appears to have turned an American football club into a Malawian online sensation.
KC Current now boasts nearly 700,000 Facebook followers, and Malawians have made themselves impossible to ignore.
When Temwa and the Scorchers are in action, the club’s page becomes a football party where Chichewa flies, Malawi flags wave and the comments section goes completely wild.
The madness reached another level during Malawi’s back-to-back encounters with Zimbabwe in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers.
As the Scorchers battled the Mighty Warriors, KC Current’s administrator appeared ready to join the celebrations, posting messages that sent Malawians into detective mode.
“Tili ntika!!! Nanga tingalime!!! Ntchito ndi Yomweyi!!! 🙌🇲🇼 Temwa TC6 Chawinga #soccer #goal #africa #malawi #africanfootball,” read one post during Tuesday’s second leg in Zimbabwe.
The Chichewa expression is the kind of phrase that makes sense in Malawi’s social media platforms, leaving supporters wondering whether KC Current has hired a local admin to run its social media accounts.
“For sure admin uyuyu is a Malawian,” commented Real Ngozo, apparently convinced that there is a Malawian hiding behind the keyboard.
Malumbo Mbewe was already treating the club like a new relative who had finally found its way home.
“KC Current iweyo wabwera. Can you just come to Malawi, malo alipo kaletu? 😂😂😂” he wrote.
But the funniest part is what happens to the numbers.
Posts featuring Temwa and the Scorchers, the least they could attract are 5,000 likes, with some racing to 22,000 likes.
And when the club posts content that has nothing to do with the Malawian forward or her national team, however, the excitement can drop dramatically, with some posts failing to reach 1,000 likes.
Talk about a football takeover without a single Malawian buying the club!
Temwa has effectively become KC Current’s bridge to Malawi, drawing supporters who may have never followed the American side before but now seem determined to know everything happening around their heroine.
And every Scorchers match gives the club another opportunity to attract the attention of an audience hungry for updates about its favourite daughter.
Temwa has been influential for both KC Current and the Scorchers, helping turn her club performances into a source of pride for Malawians at home and abroad.
