By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the European Parliament has adopted a recommendation on EU-China political relations that supports closer cooperation between Europe and Taiwan and opposes efforts to restrict Taiwan’s international participation through coercion.
According to the ministry, the report recognizes Taiwan’s important role in the global semiconductor industry, international supply chains and high-tech innovation. It also identifies Taiwan as a significant trading partner for the European Union and emphasizes the importance of maintaining and strengthening economic ties between both sides.
The recommendation calls for deeper EU-Taiwan cooperation in areas such as semiconductors and cybersecurity. It also urges the EU to begin preparations without delay for negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or other arrangements, including a memorandum of understanding on critical supply chains.
Taiwan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the report further reiterates the European Parliament’s position opposing unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait through force or coercion. It also opposes China’s interpretation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 to support its claims concerning Taiwan, as well as efforts to pressure international organizations and third countries to limit Taiwan’s international participation.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation for the European Parliament’s continued support for Taiwan, its concern for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and its advocacy for Taiwan’s international participation.
