KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) was formed on Aug 7, 2020, following an idea mooted by its then president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
It currently comprises four component parties: Pas, Bersatu, Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) and Parti Rakyat India Malaysia (MIPP).
The collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad following the "Sheraton Move" in February 2020 paved the way for the formation of the PN government.
At the time, PN comprised Bersatu, Pas, Gerakan, Sabah Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) and the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP). The coalition sought to champion the people's interests regardless of race, religion or region, and to govern the country with integrity.
Tensions within PN have escalated, with several senior Bersatu leaders resigning, including Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who announced his resignation as PN secretary-general and Selangor PN chairman.
PN's current official membership comprises Pas, Gerakan, MIPP, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) and Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan).
On Sept 23, the Registrar of Societies (RoS) suspended all PN activities. Today, RoS cancelled PN's registration.
