A site can publish solid news every day and still never reach Google News readers. The cause is usually weak reporting, a messy site structure, missing author details, or a technical error that stops Google from finding the articles. Fixing those problems takes a clear editorial plan, original stories, and accurate site data.
Understand How Google News Works
Google News picks articles through automated systems that judge relevance, freshness, quality, authority, and reader interest. Publishers don’t need to apply for approval through Google News Publisher Center. Google finds and reviews eligible content by itself, and no site can be guaranteed a place in the feed.
Google News, the News tab in Google Search, and the Top Stories section each serve a different purpose. An article can show up in one without appearing in the others. Strong search presence helps readers discover a publication, but every placement still depends on Google’s systems and the reader’s interests.
Build Trust with Clear Publisher Details
A news site needs visible signs of editorial responsibility. The About Us page should explain what the publication covers and what standards it follows. Author pages should carry real names, relevant experience, and links to published work, and a contact page should give readers a direct way to reach the editorial team.
Publication and update dates should match each article’s real history. A corrections policy should say how the site handles errors and reader complaints. HTTPS, stable article URLs and clear labels on sponsored content matter too. Together, these steps show readers who stands behind each story.

Publish Original and Useful News
Original reporting gives a site a reason to be noticed. Verified facts, expert comments, public records, firsthand details and useful context all add value. A site that only rewrites press releases or copies other publishers offers little that’s new.
Pick a clear subject area, such as technology, local government, education, business or public policy. Steady coverage of a focused topic builds expertise over time. Headlines should state the main event in plain language, and the opening paragraph should explain what happened and why it matters. Exaggerated claims, false urgency and vague titles that hide the point should stay out.
Fix Article Structure and Technical SEO
Each story needs its own permanent URL and a clean page layout. The headline, author name, publication date, article text, and relevant images should be readable by search engines. Internal links should let readers move between related stories without confusion.
Structured data helps Google understand a story’s headline, author, images and dates. Publishers can use the NewsArticle type with accurate fields such as headline, image, datePublished, dateModified and author. The markup has to match what readers see on the page. It supports search understanding, but it doesn’t guarantee a Google News spot.
Create and Submit a News Sitemap
A News sitemap helps Google find recent articles. Publishers who already have a standard XML sitemap should add a separate News sitemap, as Google recommends. It should list only articles from the past two days, keep each article’s original publication date and include the publication name, language code and article title.
One News sitemap can hold up to 1,000 entries. Update the existing file as new stories go live instead of creating a new one for every article. Once it’s ready, submit it through Google Search Console and review any errors it reports.
Use Search Console to Track Results
Google Search Console shows whether Google can crawl and index articles. The URL Inspection tool reveals indexing issues, blocked pages and canonical URL problems, and sitemap reports show whether Google has processed the submitted files.
The Google News performance report gives clicks, impressions and click-through rate for news.google.com and the Google News apps. The News search type measures performance in the News tab of Google Search. Together, they show which topics work and which articles need better headlines or stronger coverage.

A Practical First Month
The first week can go to publisher details and crawl errors. The next two weeks can focus on article quality, structured data, sitemap setup and search access. The final week belongs to traffic reports and content changes.
No single setting or high article count wins a place in Google News. What works is useful reporting, clear publisher details, accurate technical data and steady editorial standards. A publication that earns reader trust gives Google a stronger reason to put its work in front of the right audience.
