The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Dr Nadir Hussain and Syed Adeel Haider, accused in a case involving illegal kidney transplantation at a private hospital in Islamabad. A two-member bench headed by Justice Shahzad Malik heard the case and ordered the release of both accused against surety bonds of Rs200,000 each.
According to the investigation record, a raid on the hospital was conducted while an illegal kidney transplant operation on a donor, Waseem Akram, was in progress. The hospital’s urologist, Dr Nadir Hussain and Syed Adeel Haider, coordinator of its kidney transplant programme, were arrested at the scene.
The record further stated that Rs1.294 million in cash was recovered from a drawer in Dr Nadir Hussain’s office. The amount was reportedly paid for the surgery.
A total of 13 accused have been nominated in the case. Of them, five have been arrested, two are on bail, while six remain absconding. According to the investigation record, Dr Nadir Hussain is accused of carrying out illegal kidney transplants involving more than 55 unrelated individuals.
Investigators also found that most of the alleged donors were brick-kiln workers who were reportedly persuaded to sell their kidneys through promises of relief from debt.
The record further stated that letters had been sent to the relevant authorities to freeze the bank accounts of Dr Nadir Hussain, agent Saleem Khan and Syed Adeel Haider.
