Max Allegri insisted he did nothing wrong for his red card in the 3-3 draw between Napoli and Roma, but his enraged reaction saw him held back by members of staff.
The coach was shown a straight red card on the touchline moments after the Leonardo Balerdi equaliser for 3-3 was given the all-clear by the VAR and referee.
Napoli had complained that Sam Beukema was fouled by Balerdi in the build-up, but while there was a nudge, it was some time before the goal.
Beukema had got back up, run to get involved in the move, and then went down again clutching his ribs only after the goal was scored.
Allegri lost his temper
DAZN touchline reporter Davide Bernardi explained that Allegri had told fourth official Juan Luca Sacchi: “If you don’t disallow this goal…”
When the VAR check was completed with no review called, Allegri began to walk off from the touchline.
He didn’t get the chance, as fourth official Sacchi alerted referee Andrea Colombo, who flashed the red card.
“What did I say? Tell me what I said? No, no!” shouted Allegri as he took off his jacket and went to throw it, but unlike previous instances, he kept it in his hand.
The Napoli coach started storming off, only to return towards the pitch and the fourth official, with members of staff desperately trying to hold him back.
He will now certainly be suspended for the midweek round trip to Monza, but the angry reaction to the dismissal could see Allegri’s ban extended to more than one match.
