It is common enough to find a single pastor ministering to commuters in Nairobi's matatus, particularly on routes through the central business district. What is far less common is finding two of them determined to occupy the same space at the same time.
Nairobi Pastors Refuse to Share the Matatu 'Pulpit'
The woman preacher, dressed in a smart Kitenge dress and clutching a Bible in one hand while steadying herself on an overhead pole with the other, positioned herself near the door and launched into a session of speaking in tongues the moment the vehicle pulled off. Loud and fervent, she showed no intention of yielding her moment.
An elderly male pastor standing directly beside her began preaching in Kiswahili, apparently intent on ignoring the noise beside him.
For a short while, both carried on independently, the matatu essentially hosting competing congregations.
The man's patience, however, ran out quickly. Mid-sermon, he turned to the woman and used his hands to cover her mouth, catching her completely off guard.
She paused, visibly startled, as he declared, "I told you to keep quiet," before attempting to continue his own preaching with his hand still pressed against her face.
The matatu erupted in laughter. A fellow passenger eventually stepped in and asked the man to release her, which he did, though reluctantly.
"Just defend her, it's okay," he muttered as he let go.
The woman, unfazed, resumed speaking in tongues almost immediately, which visibly unsettled the male preacher, who struggled to regain his composure and continue his sermon.
The passengers' amusement only grew, with one reportedly asking whether the two were husband and wife, "Ama ni Bwana na Bibi?"
The incident offered Nairobi commuters an unexpectedly entertaining ride, a reminder that even the most unlikely matatu moments can become the highlight of someone's day.
