Uber is rolling out ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s office-task agent, to more than 30,000 employees after a 1,000-person pilot, OpenAI said. It connects to Gmail, Drive and Slack and runs on GPT-6.1 Sol by default. The move comes as Uber tries to rein in its AI spending.
Uber is giving more than 30,000 employees access to ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s AI agent for office tasks, OpenAI said on Thursday. The company-wide rollout follows a pilot with 1,000 staff.
ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI launched in July, can carry out tasks with many steps and hand back finished work. It connects to tools such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar and Slack, so staff can prepare meeting briefs, build slides and analyse data.
By default, it will run on GPT-6.1 Sol, a model OpenAI released last month at about a fifth of the price of its top model. Uber’s engineers will keep using Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool.
“As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber’s future,” said Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber’s chief technology officer.
The rollout comes as Uber tries to get more for its AI money. In August, Neppalli Naga said the era of “tokenmaxxing”, or spending freely on AI, was ending. Uber had reportedly used up its whole 2026 budget for Anthropic’s Claude Code by April.
Uber has also tied job cuts to AI. In July, it laid off 10% of its customer-service team, the first time it linked layoffs to a push to use AI.
OpenAI and Uber said they will share how staff use the agent, and what results it brings, as the rollout goes on.
