Clan Head of Akai Effa in Calabar Municipality, Henrietta Effa-Akpere, has decried the environmental threats posed to the community by erosion, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.
Effa-Akpere made the statement on Tuesday after leading some community elders to inspect two major erosion sites in the community.
She said the erosion, which began about five years ago, had continued to ravage the community irrespective of repeated reports to relevant intervention agencies.
The clan head warned that the worsening erosion challenge in the community could displace more residents if nothing serious was done.
Effa-Akpere stressed that flooding from the gullies had destroyed fish and poultry farms, as well as other investments valued in the community.
She expressed worries that residents living on the erosion corridors had been displaced and that some were left without food or shelter.

“As I speak, a lot of the victims have nothing to eat, they don’t have anywhere to stay because their homes have been affected,” she said.
She urged the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the situation to save the community from further destruction and hardship.
Effa-Akpere called on Governor Bassey Otu to seek support from public and private sector stakeholders in the interest of the people.
“The Federal Government should join hands with the state government to rescue the people from the ravages of erosion
“If it continues this way, and if the rain continues to fall, the residents may face stronger hardships,” she said.
