Chappell Roan has spent the past two nights her own Super Graphic Spectacular Block Party benefit shows at LA's Shrine Auditorium. On both nights, Roan took the opportunity to showcase and perform with some of her favorites. On night one, she brought out foundational superstar Christina Aguilera as a surprise guest. Aguilera sang her own ballad "Beautiful" and then joined Roan for her own song "Coffee." The second night of the two-night extravaganza was Thursday night, and she had some more friends with her.
Last night's opening acts included MUNA and Caroline Polachek. Polachek only sang two songs, and one of them was her 2019 ballad "Look At Me Now." Midway through the song, Roan joined Polachek and turned it into a duet. The two of them looked and sounded luminous up there together.
During her own set, Chappell Roan also brought out PinkPantheress. Before introducing her guest, Roan said a lot of nice things about the direction in which she's taking pop music before gushing, "She's just so cunt!" Then PinkPantheress came out and sang a charming take on "Tonight." Roan didn't sing it with her as a duet or anything, but she did have fun with some of the call--and-response stuff at the end.
Lola Young was one of Chappell Roan's night-one openers. Last night, Roan sang her own big ballad "Picture You," and Young emerged mid-song to really belt out some of those parts.
I'm enjoying this "pop stars admiring and being friends with each other" dynamic. Let's keep that going.
