Political developments, court rulings and civic poll results were among the key stories from the western region on Tuesday. In Maharashtra, Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke accused the Delhi Police of illegally detaining three of his party leaders after they went to Jantar Mantar and “unfurled” the tricolour.
Also during the day, BJP MP Ravi Kishan attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the Opposition protest in Delhi, the Bombay High Court delivered rulings on two separate matters, and the BJP retained control of key urban local bodies in Gujarat.
At Hingoli, Dipke asked, “Is waving tricolour a crime in India,” and claimed that the three CJP leaders were being illegally detained by the Delhi Police. He said the detention amounted to “kidnapping”.
In Raipur, BJP MP Ravi Kishan alleged that Rahul Gandhi had “lost mental balance” and accused the Congress of disrupting public life in Delhi. He claimed that videos of the protest in the national capital showed Gandhi hitting his own party workers during the Opposition’s agitation.
In Mumbai, the Bombay High Court refused to pass blanket orders against police detention of people protesting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The court, however, said it would take action if specific instances of illegality were brought before it.
In another ruling, the Bombay High Court said insisting on someone’s conversion does not amount to insulting the religious beliefs of any class. The court quashed a case against four people who were accused of coercing a couple to convert to Christianity.
In Gujarat, the BJP swept the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation polls by winning 38 of the 44 seats. According to the State Election Commission, the party also retained power in the Thara and Okha municipalities.
Overall, the day’s developments from the western region included a political row over an alleged detention in Delhi, sharp remarks over the Opposition protest, two significant Bombay High Court orders, and a strong electoral showing by the BJP in Gujarat’s civic polls.
