Epic Games has reportedly delayed an upcoming game being developed in collaboration with Walt Disney and instructed the team to rely much more heavily on artificial intelligence during production.
The project had previously been expected to launch in March, but it has now been delayed with no replacement release date announced.
Marvel and Star Wars Shooter
The game is described as a shooter featuring characters from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises.
Developers working on the project have reportedly been told to follow an “AI first” production model, with humans overseeing and directing the work produced by AI systems.
One of the tools specifically mentioned for the project is Anthropic’s Claude.
“No More Hand-Written Code”
The shift appears to go well beyond using AI as a supplementary development tool.
In an internal message, one of the game’s directors reportedly told employees:
“No more hand-written code.”
The same message said that the game’s artwork would be created using “full AI workflows.”
That suggests AI could be used across both programming and visual production, while developers remain responsible for guiding, reviewing, and managing the output.
Epic Has Been Pushing AI Across the Company
Epic Games had already been encouraging wider AI adoption across its different divisions before the reported change to the Disney project.
However, the upcoming title could represent a much more aggressive experiment.
It may become the first major video game from a large publisher to be developed primarily through AI-assisted workflows rather than traditional production methods.
Epic Says Developers Will Still Lead the Creative Work
Epic Games says AI will not replace the people responsible for the project’s creative direction.
The company described the approach as “AI-accelerated development,” with Epic developers remaining the creative leaders behind the work.
Epic communications director Jake Jones said the developers would continue to serve as the “visionaries and creative drivers” for the company’s projects.
For now, the biggest immediate consequence is the delay. The Disney collaboration no longer has a confirmed release date, while Epic moves the development team toward a substantially more AI-driven production process.
