Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams joined Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase in making successful appeals to the league after being fined in Week 2.
Williams received a pair of fines for celebrations that involved him pretending to take a puff of something and pass it to teammates who were also fined for participating in the act. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Williams argued that the gesture was not offensive and “that marijuana is legal in some states if that was the gesture he was making.”
In a statement clarifying that drinking-related celebrations are allowed, the NFL and NFL Players Association reminded players that celebrations involving simulated smoking or drug use are still forbidden. Appeals officer Derrick Brooks also cautioned Williams about his future behavior.
“Although I rescinded this fine, please make every effort to celebrate with your teammates in the best professional manner possible,” Brooks wrote.
Williams was also fined $23,417 for illegal use of the helmet in Week 3.
