The Deputy Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports and Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has called on government and the Ministry of Finance to ensure the timely release of funds to the National Youth Authority (NYA) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
He noted that delays in releasing the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), on which the NYA largely depends, were affecting operations and hindering the Authority’s target of training 100,000 young people this year, with fewer than 20,000 trained so far.
“We are therefore appealing to the government and the Ministry of Finance to turn their attention to the agencies under the Ministry of Youth Development. If the issues of the youth are truly close to their hearts, they should ensure that the necessary funding is made available to these agencies,” Mr. Aidoo said.
He disclosed that the Committee had also inspected the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, where the NYA has managed to improve the facility despite limited resources, and expressed optimism that it would be fully operational by the end of the year or early next year.
Mr. Aidoo made the appeal when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports paid a working visit to the National Youth Authority Headquarters to assess its operations, programmes and challenges.
The Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, Osman Ayariga Esq., briefed the Committee on the Authority’s mandate, operations and ongoing efforts to advance youth development in Ghana, highlighting key programmes and constraints.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations and Programmes, Alhaji Inusah Mahama, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate and working closely with Parliament to address existing challenges.
The Chairman of the Committee and MP for Ashaiman, Ernest Henry Norgbey, acknowledged the challenges confronting the Authority and commended the CEO and staff for their continued efforts despite limited resources, pledging the Committee’s support to help resolve the issues.
