Shree Amba Maheshwari Seva Trust that has been working on scientific waste management and traffic management, has urged the Dakshina Kannada district administration to make proper arrangements in advance for traffic and waste management and public safety during the upcoming Navaratri celebrations in the city.
In a statement here, the Trust said it has submitted memorandums to the Deputy Commissioner and the city administration underlining the need for effective coordination between different agencies. The Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple and the Mangaladevi Temple attract thousands of people, ,vehicles and temporary fair stalls during the celebrations.
Having been assisting the city traffic police in traffic management on Mangaladevi Temple Car Street for the last few months, the Trust has urged the administration to make use of the newly built Mangaladevi Bus Terminal for winding up and commencing trips of city buses operating out of Mangaladevi. This would reduce traffic congestion to a great extent. Also, about 100 m area around the temple should be made free of vehicles, stalls and traffic thereby ensuring safety of devotees while goods vehicles should be diverted on alternative routes.
Regarding waste management, temporary fair stalls should have separate bins for wet and dry waste and the waste should be properly handed over for collection and disposal. Regular monitoring should be carried out to prevent littering and improper disposal. Traffic diversions, parking arrangements, waste collection and cleaning should also be planned in advance for processions and during peak hours.
Under its Awake Kudla initiative, the Trust was exploring to find practical solutions to the city’s waste and traffic-related challenges. The initiative focuses on identifying problems, creating public awareness, coordinating with the departments concerned, monitoring the steps taken and ensuring follow-up. For the past three years, the Trust has been working as a link between the public and the government system, encouraging public participation in finding solutions to issues.
