According to guidance published by the Bundeswehr, foreign nationals from countries outside the European Union may be considered for civilian salaried positions if they have a valid residence permit that allows them to work in Germany and meet the qualifications required for the role.
The guidance distinguishes between military service, civil-service employment and civilian salaried work, as each category has different eligibility requirements.
Four organisations linked to Germany’s military
The Bundeswehr identifies several organisations that provide services to Germany’s armed forces and employ civilian personnel. These may offer opportunities for qualified foreign applicants, depending on individual vacancies and recruitment conditions.
1. BWI GmbH
BWI provides information technology services to the Bundeswehr. Relevant civilian roles may involve IT systems, digital services, cybersecurity and technical support, depending on available vacancies.
2. Bw Fuhrparkservice GmbH
This organisation manages vehicle fleet services. Potential roles may relate to fleet operations, vehicle management, logistics and administration, subject to advertised requirements.
3. Bw Bekleidungsmanagement GmbH
The company is responsible for clothing and equipment management for Germany’s armed forces. Its civilian operations may involve logistics, supply chains, warehousing and related services.
4. Heeresinstandsetzungslogistik GmbH (HIL)
HIL provides maintenance and logistics services for military equipment. Relevant positions may require technical, mechanical, engineering or logistical qualifications, depending on the job.
The guidance identifies these organisations as possible civilian employment routes but does not establish that every vacancy is open to foreign nationals. Applicants must check the eligibility conditions for each advertised position.
Can foreigners join the German military?
Foreign nationals without German citizenship generally cannot enlist as soldiers in the Bundeswehr under its standard recruitment rules.
The guidance notes that exceptions may be possible in individual cases where the German Ministry of Defence identifies a specific need. However, this is not a general exemption that foreign applicants can automatically rely on.
Civil-service employment also has separate nationality requirements. Certain exceptions may apply to EU citizens and other legally eligible groups, while applicants from outside these groups face additional restrictions.
Civilian salaried employment is therefore a separate option for eligible foreign nationals, provided they satisfy immigration, professional and role-specific requirements.
What Kenyans and other African applicants should know
Kenyans and other African nationals interested in working for organisations connected to Germany’s armed forces should distinguish between civilian employment and military service.
A civilian position does not mean the applicant becomes a member of the German military. It is employment with an organisation providing services to the Bundeswehr or supporting its operations.
Before applying, candidates should:
- Check whether the vacancy accepts applicants who are not German citizens.
- Confirm that their German residence status permits them to take up the proposed employment.
- Review the required qualifications, professional experience and language skills.
- Verify the employer and application procedure through official recruitment channels.
Denmark military: Requirements to join
Meanwhile, TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Denmark announced a policy allowing foreign residents to apply for military service without citizenship, including the four factors authorities consider.
Applicants must first register for Forsvarets Dag, the military’s assessment day, but simply living in Denmark may not be enough. Their residence and work permits, ties to the country and plans to seek citizenship can all shape the decision.
