Mexico Journalist Killings Rarely Solved

MEXICO · PRESS FREEDOM

Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a Paris-based press freedom group, says 169 journalists have been murdered in Mexico over the past 20 years. It presented the findings on Tuesday 20 October 2026.

Fewer than 1% of those cases were fully solved, according to RSF. That matters to US readers because much of what they learn about cartels, migration and trade comes from reporters who work under this threat.

Impunity Record

RSF counts 169 murders since 2006, an average of about eight a year. It calls this the longest series of journalist killings in a country at peace in the 21st century.

In 168 of the 169 cases, RSF says, neither the person who ordered the killing nor the motive has been identified. Another 21 cases were only partly solved, according to the group.

RSF links the killings to organised crime, and it points to failures by the Mexican state to protect reporters and to prosecute those responsible. The group says the murders often follow reporting on crime and politics.

Who Is Being Killed

According to RSF, 166 of the 169 victims, or 98%, were local journalists. Some 59% reported on organised crime and 46% covered politics.

Five states account for half of the murders: Veracruz, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chihuahua and Tamaulipas. Veracruz alone has 32 victims.

RSF says at least 34 victims, or 20%, showed signs of torture. Artur Romeu, RSF’s director for Latin America, said: “For those operating within this system, murder alone is not enough. The message must get through, whatever it takes.”

Prosecutors and Disappearances

RSF counts five sentences between 2006 and 2016 and at least 33 in the following decade. The federal prosecutor for crimes against freedom of expression is known as FEADLE.

The group also documents 43 journalists who disappeared between 2006 and 2026. Of these, 24 are still missing.

RSF asks President Claudia Sheinbaum for an emergency response, swift investigations and monitoring mechanisms. We found no government reply to the report in coverage available on Wednesday 21 October 2026.

What It Means for You

Readers who follow Mexico as a trade partner or a source of migration should treat local reporting from violent regions with care. Where journalists are silenced, gaps in coverage are likely.

The figures also show a risk for anyone working or travelling near the five worst-hit states. A positive sign is that convictions have risen, though they remain rare.

What Is Not Known

RSF has not published, in the coverage we reviewed, the full list of 169 names and the inclusion criteria. Mexican authorities may count solved cases differently, for example by arrests or convictions of the shooters.

How the government will respond to RSF’s appeal is also unknown. Whether the figures will change policy or funding for protecting reporters has not been said.
