Greek tennis star Lydia Panagiotidou has been crowned Tennis Europe Masters U16 champion in Monte Carlo, becoming the first Greek female player to win the prestigious title in the category.
The 16 year old delivered a dominant performance in the final on Saturday, October 24, defeating Serbia’s Zana Peric 6-3, 6-2 to cap an outstanding week without dropping a single set.
Representing the Thessaloniki Tennis Club, Panagiotidou demonstrated remarkable consistency and composure throughout the tournament, confirming her status as one of Greece’s most promising young tennis talents.
Panagiotidou Dominates the Final
Panagiotidou seized control of the final early, securing a break of serve in the opening set and maintaining pressure on her opponent.
The Greek teenager remained solid on serve and prevented Peric from mounting a serious challenge, closing out the first set 6-3 with another crucial break.
She carried that momentum into the second set, breaking early again and refusing to relinquish control. With her serve holding firm, Panagiotidou completed the 6-2 victory to secure the historic championship.
An Unbeaten Run to the Title
Panagiotidou’s triumph was built on an impressive series of performances in Monte Carlo, as she swept through the competition without losing a set.
Her results were:
- First round: Defeated Leonie Sauer 6-2, 6-3
- Second round: Defeated Danae Margariti 6-1, 6-1
- Third round: Defeated Ana Chahunashvili 6-0, 6-1
- Final: Defeated Zana Peric 6-3, 6-2
The commanding scorelines underlined her consistency and ability to raise her level as the tournament progressed.
Continuing Greece’s Tennis Success
Panagiotidou’s achievement adds another milestone to the development of Greek tennis, following Rafael Pagonis’ victory in the boys’ U14 category at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in 2025.
Her success also follows an impressive year on the international junior circuit. In September, Panagiotidou won a bronze medal at the U16 European Championships, further establishing herself among the leading young players in her age group.
Coach Apostolos Triantafyllidis has supported her throughout her journey, including her recent European Championship campaign.
The Monte Carlo title represents a landmark moment for Panagiotidou and Greek women’s tennis, offering further evidence of the talent emerging through Greece’s junior ranks.
For Greek tennis, her historic victory is another reason to look forward to the next generation.
