Jamaica seeks to attract Middle Eastern tourists
১৩/১০/২০২৬

Middle Eastern travelers can expect to learn a lot more about Jamaica’s tourism sector and its expanding industry. The Jamaican government is stepping up efforts to attract Middle Eastern high-end tourism.
According to Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, plans are afoot to pursue stronger air links and tourism partnerships, aimed at preparing the island as well as a gateway between the Middle East and the wider Caribbean.
Bartlett said Jamaica is in discussion with Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways as the government explores ways to improve connectivity between the Middle East and the Caribbean. The broader objective is to establish Jamaica as a hub linking Gulf destinations with markets in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
The strategy is aimed at tapping into the Middle East’s growing pools of travelers, which include visitors seeking luxury and high-end tourism experiences. Jamaica has been working to deepen its engagement with the Gulf Corporation Council, where tourism officials see opportunities for increased arrivals, investments, and business partnership. Air connectivity, however, remains central to the efforts.
Minister Bartlett has also been engaging with Emirates about leveraging its existing network to improve access to Jamaica and other Caribbean and Latin American destinations. The government previously had Gulf carriers and their extensive international networks as potential links between Jamaica and new source markets.
Saudi Arabia is another focus of the initiative and Minister Bartlett recently held discussions with the Saudi Fund for Development on potential cooperation in tourism including in areas such as training, education, and health infrastructure. The talks also included possible support for Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa reconstruction efforts.
As industry representatives have previously identified the Middle East as a potentially lucrative market for luxury tourism, while noting that Jamaica will need to tailor services and experiences to the preferences of Gulf travelers. Jamaica also aims to diversify its tourism market and want to attract greater economic benefits for the sector.
The collaboration for more engagements also comes as Jamaica aims to strengthen its position as a regional and aviation hub. The government believes stronger links with Gulf airlines could benefit not only Jamaica but the neighboring Caribbean islands by creating additional pathways into the region.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader Tourism 3.0 strategy, which Bartlett has described as a new development framework intended to expand Jamaica’s economy.
Jamaica is therefore seeking to move beyond simple attracting more visitors from the Middle East by building longer term relationships involving air connectivity, investment, tourism development, and trade.
The government hopes those links will strengthen Jamaica’s access to one of the world’s ever expanding travel markets while reinforcing the island’s role as a gateway to the wider Caribbean.
