Embraer, the Brazilian aircraft maker, said on Friday that its order backlog hit a record US$35.7 billion at the end of September. That is up 3% from the previous record of US$34.5 billion in June and up 14% from US$31.3 billion a year earlier, according to its filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
The figure matters beyond Embraer, because it is one of the biggest names in Brazil’s economy. It trades in New York as EMBJ and on the São Paulo stock exchange as EMBJ3.

What It Means for US Readers
US airlines hold a large share of the order book. American Airlines, SkyWest and Republic Airways still await 66, 63 and 26 E175 regional jets, and Avelo Airlines is due 50 E195-E2 jets.
For shareholders, a record backlog points to years of sales, but it is not profit, and orders can slip or be cancelled. Embraer’s financial results will show how much of it turns into earnings.
Our earlier report on the two Embraer rating upgrades covers the credit upgrades that came before this update.
What Is Not Known
The release does not say what margin the new orders carry, or how soon the backlog will turn into cash. Our earlier report on the C-390 programme covers a first delivery in Central Asia.
