The Houston Comets return to the WNBA next season, and they’ve already found a local broadcasting home.
On Thursday, the Comets and Tegna announced a multi-year deal that will make it easy for anyone in the Houston market to find games.
KTBU Channel 55 and CBS affiliate KHOU 11 (select games) will broadcast Comet games on free TV, while Space City Home Network will simulcast on cable, DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, and Fubo. The network’s direct-to-consumer product, SCHN+, will also stream all games.
“Bringing the Comets back to Houston is about reigniting the passion, pride, and energy that have always connected this organization with its fans and community,” said Gretchen Sheirr, President of Business Operations for the Houston Rockets and Comets. “As the WNBA continues to reach new heights, we’re thrilled to partner with TEGNA to make Comets basketball more accessible to fans across the Houston area through free, over-the-air broadcasts on KTBU and additional coverage on KHOU. We’re excited to bring fans closer to the action and deliver outstanding coverage as we begin this exciting new chapter in Comets history.”
According to a press release, KHOU will also create exclusive Comets content year-round, providing coverage across its newscasts, 24/7 streaming channel, and digital platforms.
“KHOU has covered Houston sports for decades, and the Comets’ homecoming is a story we’ve been waiting to tell,” said David Loving, KHOU’s president and general manager. “As a founding partner, we’re ready to bring Comets action to fans across the region.”
The Houston Comets were one of the WNBA’s original eight franchises and won the league’s first four championships. Despite that, the league folded the franchise in 2008 during the height of the Great Recession. This year, the Fertitta family, owners of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, purchased the Connecticut Sun and relocated the team to Houston as the new Houston Comets.
Longtime ESPN NBA reporter Kevin Pelton joined the Houston Comets’ front office earlier this year.
