The death toll is steadily rising amid renewed military tensions between the Saudi-led coalition and the armed Houthi group in Yemen. Since the ongoing conflict began in August, at least 1,574 people have been killed, and another 6,939 have been injured.
This information emerged from the latest statistics published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday (October 22). The matter was reported in an article by Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.
According to WHO data, a total of 8,513 people have been casualties in the Yemen conflict from early August to October 19. Of these, 1,574 were killed and 6,939 were injured.
However, the organization has not released detailed information on how many of the deceased and injured were civilians and how many were fighters or military personnel.
According to WHO statistics, in the last eight days, 292 people have been killed and 1,048 injured in the conflict in Yemen.
Previously, in a report published last Thursday, the organization stated that since the new escalation began on August 6, 1,282 people had been killed and 5,891 injured in the country. The latest figures show a significant increase in both deaths and injuries.
The long-standing political and military conflict in Yemen originated in 2014 when Houthi rebels seized several key regions of the country, including the capital Sana’a.
As the situation deteriorated, the Saudi Arabia-led coalition launched a military operation in the country in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
Since then, the country’s security situation has become unstable due to intermittent clashes, military operations, and retaliatory attacks.
Currently, vast areas of northern and western Yemen are under the control of the Houthi group. In contrast, pro-government forces and their allies control a large portion of the southern and eastern regions, including the port city of Aden.
Amidst this prolonged conflict, the recent military escalation has further increased casualties. The latest casualty figures highlight the severity of the country’s ongoing security and humanitarian crisis.
