Tiger Woods has given golf fans another reason to wonder whether his competitive career has another chapter left. The 15-time major champion was filmed hitting golf balls at Liberty National in New Jersey in September, providing a notable public look at his game following his March car crash. More recently, his appearance at Pebble Beach for a junior golf event brought fresh attention to his recovery.
Woods has not competed on the PGA Tour since the 2024 Open Championship, and a return remains unconfirmed. His latest appearances have renewed discussion about a possible comeback in 2027. However, the signs of progress come after serious injuries, multiple surgeries and a period away from competitive golf.
Tiger Woods’ latest appearances revive comeback talk
The September footage showed Woods hitting golf shots during a clinic connected with the Nexus Cup, an amateur event benefiting his TGR Foundation. Video of the session circulated publicly, drawing attention to a golfer whose playing schedule has repeatedly been interrupted by physical setbacks.
Woods also offered a brief assessment of his game during the clinic, saying, “I can hit pretty much anything.” The remark suggested confidence in his ability to hit different shots, although it did not establish whether he could withstand the demands of tournament golf.
In October, Woods appeared at the TGR Jr. Invitational at Pebble Beach, where he interacted with young golfers and was seen practicing. Golf Channel reported on the appearance on October 13, bringing his physical condition and potential return back into the golf conversation.
Why the driving-range footage matters
A range session is a limited indicator of readiness, but it provides a tangible sign of golf activity after months away from public view. Woods was able to make full swings in the September footage, giving fans something more concrete than speculation about his rehabilitation.
Tournament golf requires substantially more than striking balls from a practice mat or grass range. Players must manage repeated swings, walk long distances, cope with uneven lies, and recover between rounds, all of which could present challenges for a golfer with Woods’ injury history.
The distinction is especially important because Woods has not confirmed a competitive timetable. The footage demonstrates that he was hitting shots; it does not establish his endurance, his ability to play four rounds, or whether his medical team has cleared him for a full tournament.
A difficult recovery has shaped his timeline
Woods’ recent absence followed several major physical setbacks. He underwent surgery in October 2025 to replace a damaged disk in his lower back and had previously suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, adding to the long list of procedures that have affected his career.
His recovery has also been complicated by injuries sustained in a February 2021 rollover crash in California, which caused severe damage to his right leg and ankle. Woods returned to competition after that accident, but walking a full tournament course has remained a recurring challenge.
In March 2026, Woods was involved in another rollover crash in Florida and subsequently stepped away from public commitments to seek treatment. In September, he pleaded no contest to a reckless-driving charge related to the incident and received a five-year driver’s license suspension.
Fun fact:Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach by 15 strokes, the largest winning margin in men’s major-championship history.
Why a 2027 return is attracting attention
The 2027 golf calendar contains several venues with strong connections to Woods’ career. Augusta National hosts the Masters in April, while Pebble Beach will host the U.S. Open in June, creating potential storylines around two courses associated with major achievements in his career.
Woods has won the Masters 5 times, most recently in 2019, and remains eligible to compete there as a past champion. Pebble Beach also carries major significance because Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open there by a record 15 strokes.
A return at either tournament remains speculation rather than a confirmed plan. Woods is not currently listed among the players exempt for the 2027 U.S. Open, so he would need to qualify or receive another form of exemption to play at Pebble Beach. Any competitive return would also depend on his physical readiness.
The difference between a golf comeback and a public appearance
Woods has remained connected to golf through business responsibilities, course-design projects, charitable initiatives, and his involvement with TGL, the indoor team golf league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy. Those roles have allowed him to contribute to the sport even when injuries have prevented regular tournament participation.
His March 2026 appearance in the TGL Finals showed that he could return to competitive golf in a controlled indoor setting after an extended absence. However, TGL takes place in a purpose-built indoor venue, with different physical demands from walking a traditional PGA Tour course.
The September range session and October appearance at Pebble Beach have added further evidence of his ongoing connection with the game. Neither event, however, has included an announcement of a return date or a confirmed entry into a PGA Tour tournament.
Woods’ next step remains uncertain
Woods’ latest public golf activity has renewed interest because his career has repeatedly featured returns from setbacks that once appeared capable of ending his playing days. His 2019 Masters victory, following years of back problems, remains one of the most memorable examples of that resilience.
At 50, the challenge is different from simply recovering his swing. His physical condition, ability to tolerate sustained play, and readiness to compete against younger players will all influence whether another professional appearance becomes realistic.
For now, the confirmed developments are limited but meaningful: Woods has returned to hitting balls in public, appeared at a junior event at Pebble Beach, and spoken positively about his ability to hit shots. A competitive comeback in 2027 remains possible, but Woods has not announced a tournament or date.
