A striking image from Kenya's Mashujaa Day celebrations has caught the eye of many online, showing President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed craning their necks skyward as Kenya Defence Forces aircraft streaked overhead.
The moment was captured on Monday, October 20, at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, where Kenya marked the annual holiday honouring the heroes who fought for the country's independence.
Both leaders, dressed formally and standing behind what appeared to be a glass barrier at the VIP section, instinctively raised their hands to shield their eyes as they tracked the fast-moving jets cutting through the sky above the stadium.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister's presence at the event added an international dimension to Kenya's national celebrations, underscoring the close diplomatic ties between Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
Ahmed attended as a guest of honour alongside Ruto, and the two leaders were seen together throughout the ceremony.
The KDF air display is traditionally one of the most anticipated moments of Mashujaa Day, drawing gasps and applause from the crowd as military aircraft perform dramatic flypasts above the stadium.
The photograph, shared on Facebook by Nairobi News, captured the two heads of state in a rare, unguarded moment, their reactions entirely natural as the jets roared past at speed.
The 2026 edition featured the customary military parade, cultural performances and the KDF aerial display that clearly left even the two leaders momentarily transfixed.

Eldoret, the capital of Uasin Gishu County and widely regarded as Kenya's athletics heartland, hosted this year's national celebrations.
Kipchoge Keino Stadium, named after legendary Olympic champion Kipchoge Keino, provided a fitting backdrop for the occasion.
Mashujaa Day, observed every 20 October, is one of Kenya's most significant public holidays, commemorating the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in the struggle against colonial rule.
