Halloween is becoming a regular part of the fall season around Lake Balaton: this year, numerous lakeside towns are offering exciting programs from pumpkin carving and costume parties, to spooky treasure hunts and nighttime castle tours.
In recent years, Halloween has sparked debate in many parts of Europe over whether children should take part in activities such as pumpkin-carving events. The issue also came up around Lake Balaton some years ago when a broader cultural debate emerged over whether the Anglo-Saxon holiday belonged alongside Hungary’s traditional observances of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
Those debates have largely died down, and Halloween events are now a familiar sight around Lake Balaton.
Tourism businesses have found a balance: rather than replacing traditional holidays, Halloween has become a complement to the fall season.
While the final days of October are all about playful scares and family fun, the first days of November remain dedicated to lighting candles and remembering loved ones.

In Balatonalmádi, the Halloween by Balatonalmádi event will bring family-friendly activities and entertainment for children to the Kerényi Imre Cultural Granary. Those looking for a different kind of Halloween experience can visit Szigliget Castle for a moonlight tour and torchlit walk, taking in the historic site and its panoramic views of Lake Balaton after dark.
