A Bangladeshi national was apprehended during a joint operation conducted by the Border Security Force (BSF) and police in North Tripura's Kadamtala area for allegedly entering India illegally through the Indo-Bangladesh border. The arrest has once again brought the issue of cross-border infiltration into focus in the border belt of the district.
The detainee has been identified as Moinuddin Mia (40), alias Dalim Mia, a resident of the Juri police station area in Bangladesh's Moulvibazar district. Authorities said he is the son of Khalid Mia of East Botoli-Birentala locality.
According to police sources, acting on specific intelligence inputs, personnel of Kadamtala Police Station and jawans of the D Company of the BSF's 97 Battalion carried out a joint operation in the Yakubnagar Border Outpost area on Thursday. During the raid, Moin Uddin was detained from the residence of one Taiyab Ali in Ward No. 1 of Ichairpar under West Pratyek Roy Gram Panchayat.
Following the operation, BSF officials completed the necessary formalities and handed over the accused to Kadamtala Police Station. A case was subsequently registered under the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Officer-in-Charge Gurupada Debnath said the matter was registered as Kadamtala Police Station Case No. 62/26, and the accused was produced before the Dharmanagar court on Friday as part of the legal process.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that Moinuddin had married Rukiya Akhtar Happy, daughter of Kadamtala resident Taiyab Ali, around 13 years ago. The couple reportedly has a son and a daughter, while his wife and children have been residing at her parental home in Kadamtala for a considerable period.
During questioning, the accused allegedly admitted that he had crossed the international border illegally on Wednesday afternoon after paying approximately Rs 10,000 to a broker and later took shelter at his in-laws' residence. Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding his entry and stay in the area.
The arrest drew family members, including his wife and children, to the police station after news of the detention spread. However, it remains unclear whether any legal action will be initiated against individuals accused of assisting or sheltering him after his alleged illegal entry into India.
